How We Learn

Welcome to our Early Years page! Find out how learning is fun in Early Years.

We start the morning by finding our name cards and counting how many children are at school each day.

Children work in small groups to learn phonics everyday.

Independent Learning

Children in Early Years learn through a balance between teacher input and through independent play. At Thomas Fairchild we love messy play and exploring using our senses. Play develops our ability to think creatively and use our imaginations.

Outside Play

Children have regular access to the outside learning environment. This gives them the chance to fully express themselves in loud, messy and join in large group activities. We love creating our own role play worlds such as police and fire stations! Our favourite group games are duck, duck, goose; hide and seek; what’s the time Mr Wolf? We also enjoy bringing stories to life such as The Three Little Pigs and We’re Going On A Bear Hunt by acting them out.

Every week we focus our literacy learning around different books to develop understanding of story. We look in detail at characters, settings and sequencing events. It is also important that we develop our speaking and listening skills by sharing our thoughts and feelings about the stories that we read. Our favourite stories are Funnybones, Owl Babies and The Rainbow Fish.

Literacy 2

Every week we focus on devloping different mathematical knowledge such as number, calculating and shape, space and measure. We aim to give children real life experiences to develop their problem solving skills and understanding.

Circle Time

Circle time is a chance to develop our personal, social and emotional skills. This is a time to share our thoughts and feelings and think about others.

Family Tuesday Reception

Every Tuesday Reception parents are welcome to stay for half an hour after house reading (9:30 am – 10 am). This is a great opportunity for parents to spend some quality time with their children at school and find out what they are learning and speak to their child’s key person. In addition, we have Family Friday for our Nursery children’s Parents/Carers, in the morning (9 am – 9:30 am) and in the afternoon (12:30 pm -1 pm).
