Music

Music is an important part of the broad and balanced curriculum that is offered at Thomas Fairchild.  A universal language, music enables children to express their thoughts about the world around them, as well their own emotions.  Music also helps build children’s social and cultural values and develops their creativity.

  • Singing is at the heart of our music curriculum. The aim is that children will sing for at least five minutes every day.  Over the year children will sing a wide range of songs from different styles and traditions.
  • Each week there is a singing assembly for the whole school.
  • Some of our children have instrumental lessons with expert tutors from Hackney Music Services. Currently there are about 40 children who receive tuition on one of the following: violin, saxophone, guitar or percussion.
  • We take part in the annual Hackney Schools Music Festival Singing Days with groups from Early Years, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2.
  • Children have taken part in a wide range of additional musical activities which has given them the opportunity to experience high quality music making from leading musicians as well as developing their own musical skills. These have included:
    • Year 1 ‘Sing Every Day’ research project with the VOCES8 Foundation and University College London.
    • Early Years opera performance “Peace at Last” by Opera UpClose
    • Year 5 & 6 visit to the Barbican Centre for the London Symphony Orchestra Schools’ Concert.
    • ‘Achieve Your Greatness’ workshops with the Abram Wilson Foundation.
